      no longer a gay bar
The heyday of this bar was back in the 1970s and 1980s where it was standing room only. Almost entirely filled with gay men. It has since last 15 years become more heterogenized. Weekends can have more straight women than gay men there. Bar has lost a lot of business over the years. But still gets a crowd on weekends and Special events. If I didn't remember what it used to be like I would say to someone that it was a fun place to have a few drinks, dance, and watch a drag show upstairs.

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON VIP/BOTTLE SERVICE!!!! NOT WORTH IT! NOT TREATED AS VIP, NO CUSTOMER SERVICE, THEY DELIVER A BOTTLE AND YOUR MIXERS, POUR YOUR FIRST DRINK AND NOTHING FROM THERE OUT! This was my first experience of down town Minneapolis. It started off with amazing/fabulous service and great food in their happy hour area. We tipped our server almost 30% and then moved upstairs to the La Femme Drag Show area. About 30 minutes after being upstairs I asked our same server from down stairs for Bottle/VIP service, starting at $150/bottle. I decided to go for Grey Goose at $190/bottle with an automatic $28 gratuity (15%) which I had no problem paying cause I LOVED our server from our dinner service and had all intentions of tipping him more (20%) if the great service continued! We had even selfied by this point cause he was so amazing. After he brought us our bottle and poured our first drink everything went downhill from there. I went from paying for VIP service to pouring every one of my own drinks, having to leave VIP area to find him on the floor to ask for replacement of mixing agents and at one point we were out of ice that I even went up to him at the bar with my ice pitcher and asked for more ice. 10 minutes later he is down w/ pay by the drink customers taking selfies as I'm still waiting on ice and again I've already paid gratuity in advance. I am the only one who paid for bottle service and sitting in the VIP area, that I went out to the bar then to get my own ice while he was busy selfing, Even the drag show MC and bartender noted and apologized about me getting my OWN ICE as I am missing the show. At that point 107 am on 1/22/17 I asked to DJ to speak to a manager. I never was able to speak to manager, even after asking the DJ to speak to him several times and even tried calling the bar to get a hold of someone, no luck. I approached a security guard cause last call was nearing and stated that I had been asking to speak to manager for over 40 minutes and that I would not be leaving at last call. The security guard then comes up to me to say that "The manager has already spoken to you about the issue" I then proceeded to argue w/ the security guard that I had not spoken to a manager yet and that I had been waiting since 107am which the DJ confirmed! So after being rudely treated by the security guard (later finding out is security head manager, clearly has no idea what's going on, great security right?!) and sending the rest of my party home so I could wait on a manager to talk to me the server had approached me. I explained that it's bs that I was required to pay a gratuity to get horrible service, he admitted that he was the only server on the pay by drink service area and VIP area which was easily at least 50 some people if not more! Since it was going on 230 am over almost 1.5 hours of me waiting on a manager, the server offered to give me my gratuity back. He made it right, not a manager that I asked to speak too. So I write this to warn you, I was told that bottle service was WELL WORTH it, which it always has been in Vegas, Denver, Houston, even in little old unknown Rapid City, SD BOTTLE/VIP service is well worth it and you pay for SERVICE in advance and you have a great night! IF you’re NOT GOING TO OFFER VIP SERVICE then I should be allow to tip what I want for the service I received. NOT AT GAY 90'S THEY TAKE YOUR MONEY, TREAT YOU LIKE EVERYONE ELSE AND AFTER YOUR NIGHT HAS BEEN RUINED AND YOU'VE COMPLAINED AND COMPLAINED THEN MAYBE YOUR SERVER WILL FEEL GUILTY LIKE MINE AND RETURN YOUR TIP TO MAKE IT RIGHT! It's not like I was a hard customer and a poor tipper that I deserved this treatment. My group had over $100 in ones for drag queens that we tipped out., came home with less than $20. We even tipped the security guard of the VIP section cause he made sure no one bothered us or our stuff! When I left the bar the security guard of VIP who was now watching the door told me about my party leaving (that I sent home without me while I waited on a manager) and I explained that it was all good cause I sent them ahead so I could speak to a manager. The security guard even apologized about my nonexistence VIP experience.

      its ok
It is okay for a bar but I never did like the fact that straights like to come and stare at us. The fact that it is not gay owned also makes a difference in my book. I prefer to sink my money into the glbt community.

      First and Last Time
Rude bouncers, rude managers, rude staff. No wonder it was dead on a busy night. Gays won't stand for the treatment I experienced from a place that is supposed to be a welcoming sanctuary. Wish I would've read the reviews before going. It certainly would've helped me to know ahead of time what to expect. Enjoy my $5 cover cuz it the last from me and if others are smart they'll avoid this dump. Wish I could give zero stars.

This place is now THE BEST Gay Bar in Minnesota
If you haven't been to The Gay 90's for a while, you're missing out. Three of the bars have been remodeled (Happy Hour, Men's Room, Retro), with more renovations coming. There are new bathrooms on the 1st floor. They throw foam parties in the Dance Annex. They introduced a new menu and offer late-night bar food on weekends. There's an Eggs n' Drag Brunch every Sunday which you can bring the kids to. They have Kinky Fridays with kink demonstrations, a Girls Dance Party night, TransExotica events, and still have the best Drag Show in Minnesota. And the drinks are still cheap and STRONG.

      Was once cool
It used to be awesome many years ago but now they have let it get run down, people are rude and it is just awful. I would recommend the Saloon or maybe even one of the many other bars. It just isn't as cool as it once was. I feel bad because the drag show used to be just awesome but everything else has just detracted from it.

      What an f'ing dump
3 words: dank, dirty, and straight. Seems like the suburban kids like to come here for bachelorette parties and to watch the "freak show". Plus, frankly I don't feel safe in this neighborhood (and I'm from Jersey). The staff is rude (again, Jersey here) the place feels like it needs a power washer taken to every surface (yep, Jersey) and the dance music STINKS. A cover charge for this place? Why bother? Give it to one of the many vagrants nearby.

      Enter at your own risk!
This place is sketchy to the extreme, you might even get shot at, stabbed, pick-pocketed, mugged, or even drugged. Staff is rude, the people don't know how to party and have fun (just like the Eagle), not recommended for travelers, friends, or even locals!

Not sure what the hype is all about. This place was a total dump. TOTAL DUMP. The bathroom smelled like bleach and urine. The bar area's were filthy, the drag queens should "retire". They queens were AWFUL, worst I have ever watched. The only nice thing about this place was the "Mens" bar in the back thru the mens room. This place needs a major remodel/make over asap! P.s. the few bars around the Gay 90's are sketchy. Thus implying a dress code and I am thankful for helps keep most trouble makers out.

    • Harassment or service?
I visit the 90's on a regular basis. Every other weekend for the past two years and have never had a problem. I visited lastnight, 5/13/12 and will likely never return. Although the dress code is not posted online, nor at the door I was turned away for having my pants slightly below waist level. I asked if I was able to pull them up and tighten my belt. (Yes, I was wearing a belt) & once again was denied. Seeing as I've never had trouble and am a regular patron, I asked to speak to a manager. I was then insulted by the bouncer, who decided name calling was necessary. "You can wait a half hour Justin Bieber." Several people in line stepped out and a few even left seeing how poorly the bouncer was treating me. I verbalized my intention to stay and a second bouncer began to curse at me insisting the manager didnt want to speak with me, although non such had been contacted. Very unprofessional and classless.

      Very Diverse
This place is huge! They have a different dance floor for whatever your mood. Entertaining drag show, hip-hop, dance, pop...etc. Some people don't like it because it's too "staright" now. I don't mind the diversity... i see it as progress.
