Get ready for a night of modern timba, intense danzones, romantic boleros, and salsa, salsa, salsa!
Back from its groundbreaking tour to Cuba as the first American band ever to play Havana's International Danzón Festival, Charanga Tropical is hosting a Cuban themed party to release its new CD. The disc was recorded at legendary EGREM's Areito studio, the same space in where 'Buena Vista Social Club' and so many other classic Cuban recordings were made.
One Night In Cuba will feature an all-star lineup of musicians from Charanga Tropical, Malamanya, Salsa Del Soul, QBand, and Salsabrosa. Other guests to include Cuban pianist Viviana Pintado, Chicago Salsa singers Franklin Paz and Juan Castro, Latin jazzer Craig Russo, and dance showcases by Rene Dance Studio and salsa performance team Salsa De La Calle
Doors open at 7 p.m. with Momchil Balabanov a.k.a. DJ MonchY - spinning Salsa and Bachata hits. Bring your dancing shoes for a lively salsa lesson from one of dance instructor Rene Thompson, former lead dancer at La Tropicana in Havana, Cuba. At 8 p.m. Charanga Tropical takes the stage.
Charanga Tropical was founded in 2006 by longtime jazz saxophonist turned Latin flutist Doug Little. Little spent nearly a year in Cuba studying with musical masters. The repertoire of Charanga Tropical features classic danzones as well as a vibrant mix of modern salsa and original compositions.
In 2015 Charanga Tropical became first North American ensemble ever invited to participate in Havana's International Danzón Festival. As part of its 2015 tour Charanga appeared in concert at venues in and around Havana, performed with piano great Guillermo Rubalcaba, and was recorded live for rebroadcast on national Cuban radio. In recording their new CD at Areito studios the band became the first American group to record in the space in decades.
Charanga Tropical has appeared throughout the Upper Midwest including at Minnesota Orchestra's Sommerfest, Duluth's Reggae and World Music Festival, St. Paul's Schubert Club, and Chicago's SummerDance in Grant Park, and many other venues.
Hasta la fiesta!
