The April 4th concert at the White Page serves as an exhibition of new work from four Minneapolis based composers working in the field of contemporary electronic music.
Electronic music as a genre has been quick to adopt new sound synthesis methods and innovative compositional approaches, often developed in conjunction with new hardware and software technologies. Demonstrating a working relationship with said technologies, the evening’s performers will present new work reflecting their interest in experimental composition and sound theory.
About the performers:
Justin Meyers is a musician from Minneapolis. Performing with his homebuilt modular synthesizer system and reel-to-reel tape machine, his work is known for its warm analog quality. His minimal yet perpetually shifting compositions seem to be aqueous in structure, seamlessly drifting between tones and phases while carving out a unique melodic terrain along the way.

Eric Frye is a composer, artist and curator currently residing in Minneapolis. In his compositions for live performance and installation he uses a hybrid modular synthesizer and software synthesis to explore the perceptual organization of sound objects. His latest recording, based on algorithmic graphing of repetitive sonic events, was released in December 2014 by Barcelona based imprint, Anòmia. His most recent curatorial endeavor, Exploring Compositional Epistemologies, was a series of performances and lectures focusing on philosophy, sound, and linguistics, in addition to a five week installation of Florian Hecker’s Chimerization / Hinge, that took place during January and February 2015 at Midway Contemporary Art in Minneapolis. Currently, Frye is preparing a multi-channel sound installation that will open in October 2015 at Rochester Art Center in Minnesota.

Michael Flora is interested in exploring the philosophy of sound through both research and artistic practice. His influences stem from such wide ranging sources as: the futurist manifesto “The Art of Noises” by Luigi Russolo, Pauline Oliveros’ concept of “deep listening,” Zen, phenomenology, mathematics, psychoacoustics, rave culture, radio, musique concrete, minimalism, Fluxus, the writings of John Cage, phonography, digital artifacts/glitch and computer technology. Through performance, installation, and recording he creates pieces that are minimal, yet dynamic and immersive; examine sonic transformation and spatialization; and explore silence, texture and timbre.

Paciens Trine is an explorative composition project. It works under an intuition of sound that inhabits and augments the living Space. Sound is as physical as the desk, or grass, or the imprint. Music is often described with analogy to literature or painting, but the actual effects of resonant architecture are dissimilar to these artforms. In order to explore this linguistic trap, Paciens Trine composes under the practical guise of architect or interior designer.
