What: An inspiring concept of Black Community Building from the perspective of a Panther in Africa!
Where: The Whole Music Club, Coffman Memorial Union, University of Minnesota - East Bank Campus
Why:
The HEAL THE COMMUNITY TOUR is designed to foster cultural exchange between America and Africa, while also pointing out the many commonalities of community challenges along and community solutions that can be shared between villages in urban Africa and urban America.
We see the HEAL THE COMMUNITY TOUR as a site where we want to nourish and train activists in being healers of community trauma for the Twin Cities village. The event provides us with a special opportunity to support and healing for young people of African-descent and their comrades to gain new skills as organizers and activists.
Who:
Our Keynote speaker is Charlotte “Mama C” Hill O’Neal, a Black Panther and co-founder/director of the United African Alliance Community Center. Mama C is a world-class educator, community activist and improvisational jazz, blues, spoken word and visual artist.
Mama C performs to spark the spirit. Her work reveals the power of engaging activism and life from a place of self love.
After her husband Mzee(Elder) Pete O'Neal was targeted by the FBI Counter Intelligence Program(COINTELPRO), Mzee Pete and Mama C immigrated to Africa in 1971. In 1991 she and her husband, Mzee (Elder) Pete O’Neal, founded the United African Alliance Community Center just outside of Arusha, Tanzania. Her poetry and reflections are widely published, and she is the subject of numerous books, articles, and documentaries, including Mama C: Urban Warrior in the African Bush, which will screen in The Twin Cities throughout April.
