Florian Hecker is a German composer and artist currently residing in Scotland. In his sound-based installations and live performances he deals with specific compositional developments of postmodernity, electroacoustic music, and non-musical elements. He manipulates space, time, and self-perception in his sonic works by focusing and expanding upon specific auditory objects. A frequent collaborator with other artists and academic researchers, Hecker aims to make the physical presence of sound more tangible to listeners. His installation, Chimerization, is centered around a libretto which he commissioned from philosopher and writer Reza Negarestani. The piece consists of three audio channels with narrators reading Negarestani’s libretto in English, Farsi, and German. A performer with an extensive discography, Hecker has also exhibited his work globally since the early 2000s, including at the 53rd Venice Biennale, the 3rd Bienal Internacional de Arte Contemporaneo de Sevilla in Spain, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Toyko, Manifesta 7, the Musee d'Art Modern de la Ville in Paris, Nottingham Contemporary, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Institute of Contemporary in London, Berlin's Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k), and Frankfurt's Museum für Moderne Kunst. Hecker studied Computational Lingusitics and Psycholinguistics at Ludwig Maximilian Universität, Munich and Fine Arts at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Vienna, where he received his diploma. Hecker plans to continue his ongoing collaboration with Reza Negarestani and conduct research at MIT in 2015.
