On March 10, 2014, Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Act became law. The AHA criminalizes advocacy for LGBTI Ugandans and related assembly and expression. Perpetrators of "aggravated homosexuality" are condemned to a lifetime in prison. On May 2, a prominent Ugandan activist named Long Jones Wambere will speak at the U of M on politics, religion, and the human rights situation for LGBTI Ugandans. He will also speak to issues of global advocacy and solidarity, in particular European Union strategies to influence President Museveni, as he recently visited Brussels to report on developments in Uganda since the AHA’s passage. This is an opportunity to hear directly from one of the most powerful voices for LGBTI Ugandans' human rights.
Long Jones works with Spectrum Uganda Initiatives, an HIV/AIDS support network and advocacy group. He has also worked with a number of civil rights organizations, including Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG), the LGBTI Security Team, and the Civil Society Coalition on Human Rights and Constitutional Law. He was featured in the 2010 Vanguard documentary “Missionaries of Hate” and the 2012 documentary “Call Me Kuchu,” which recently won the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Documentary.
Location: Room 25 at Mondale Hall (the U of M Law School). PLEASE NOTE: 5/2 is a reading/study day for law students. Please use "inside voices" as you move to and from the lecture.
